Abstract

The article examines the problem of phonetic interference in the English pronunciation of Ukrainian students. The relevance of the research is determined by the importance of correct pronunciation for effective intercultural communication and the considerable influence of the native language on the process of mastering English phonetics. The study analyzes the main differences between the phonetic systems of English and Ukrainian that cause articulatory and perceptual difficulties in learning English pronunciation. Particular attention is paid to the pronunciation of interdental consonants /θ/ and /ð/, the bilabial consonant /w/, the English /r/, aspirated plosives /p/, /t/, /k/, vowel length opposition, diphthongs, stress, rhythm, and intonation.

The article describes the articulatory characteristics of problematic English sounds and identifies typical pronunciation mistakes made by Ukrainian learners under the influence of their native language. The research methodology includes descriptive, comparative, and phonetic-articulatory methods. Theoretical foundations are based on the works of Ukrainian and foreign scholars in phonetics, comparative linguistics, and language teaching methodology. The article also highlights the importance of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), articulatory awareness, and phonemic hearing in pronunciation training. A system of practical exercises aimed at overcoming phonetic interference and developing correct English pronunciation is proposed. The study emphasizes the effectiveness of interactive technologies, multimedia resources, and AI-powered pronunciation tools in modern phonetic instruction. The results demonstrate that systematic articulatory and auditory practice contributes to improving pronunciation skills and reducing the influence of the Ukrainian accent.
