DOUBLE ADDRESS AS A TRANSLATION PROBLEM IN MULTIMODAL DISCOURSE (BASED ON ANIMATED FILMS)

The article examines double address as a translation challenge in the localization of animated films, focusing on the interaction between children’s and adults’ audiences in the process of audiovisual translation. The study analyzes the specific features of animated film discourse as a polycode and multi-layered communicative space in which verbal, visual, cultural, and intertextual elements are simultaneously directed at different recipient groups. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which translators preserve, adapt, or transform semantic layers intended for children and adults in Ukrainian-language dubbing. The paper outlines the main linguistic and pragmatic markers of double address, including humor, wordplay, intertextual references, cultural allusions, stylistic contrast, and emotionally marked dialogue. The research also highlights the risks of partial semantic loss in translation, especially in cases where adult-oriented meanings are neutralized or, conversely, where child-oriented clarity is reduced. Based on selected examples from animated films, the article demonstrates that successful localization requires a balance between accessibility for child viewers and the preservation of implicit meanings relevant to adult audiences. It is argued that double address should be regarded not only as a stylistic feature of animated discourse but also as an important criterion of translation quality in audiovisual localization.
