Linguistic Bridges in Global Diplomacy: the Role of Translation in International Relations

Abstract

Diplomacy is typically viewed as state interaction, institutional negotiation, and strategic communication, often treating language as a neutral medium. This study reconceptualises translation as a form of political mediation that constructs narratives, shapes perceptions of legitimacy, and influences international inclusion dynamics. By integrating translation studies with international relations, the article examines how linguistic choices influence diplomatic communication and highlights translators as vital mediators in global political contexts.

This research emphasises the interconnectedness of language, power, and institutional inclusion, especially where geopolitical stakes are high. It highlights the pragmatic role of translation in diplomacy and the agency of translators, thereby enhancing our understanding of diplomacy as a communicative and performative element of global governance. Combining insights from both fields, it provides a nuanced view of translation as a political process that shapes narrative formation, influences diplomatic tone, and impacts power relations within institutions such as the EU and UN.
