LEXICAL, GRAMMATICAL AND STYLISTIC FEATURES OF THE DISCOURSE OF ENGLISH POLITICAL SPOTS

The article is devoted to the study of lexical, grammatical and stylistic features of the discourse of English political spots. Methods of lexical, grammatical and stylistic analysis are employed in the article for this purpose. The abovementioned methods as well as methods of generalization, contextual, interpretative, sociolinguistic, linguocultural and descriptive analysis help to explain meanings and reveal the specificity of use of lexical, grammatical and stylistically marked units in the analyzed discourse.
A political spot is a short video clip created to convey information about politicians and shape electoral preferences of the addressee. The lexical level of the discourse of English political spots is characterized by the use of means of designation of such key political notions as power, change, values, politicians, and their characteristics. Despecialized terminology, colloquial and evaluative vocabulary of the analyzed discourse provides understanding of its messages and their influential potential. Its personal pronouns and modal constructions contribute to the creating of the effect of solidarization with addressee and modelling the situations of potential positive changes implemented by politicians. Such stylistic means and devices of lexical-semantic level as metaphors, metonymies, puns, epithets, similes and allusions play key role in creating images of politicians and transmitting information about them. Alliteration, rhyme and other stylistically marked units of phonetic level contribute to the expressiveness of the discourse of English political spots. Repetitions, parallel constructions, chiasmus, antithesis, rhetoric questions enhance its memorability. The interaction of language means of different levels used in the discourse of English political spots contributes to influencing the addressee and shaping electoral preferences.
