The article examines the role of intertextuality as a fundamental tool for ensuring translation adequacy in scientific and specialized texts. The relevance of the study is driven by the necessity to integrate cognitive-linguistic approaches into modern translation practice, which is currently undergoing transformation under the influence of digital technologies. The research employs a comprehensive set of philological methods, including continuous sampling and comparative analysis, to achieve the research goal.
The main manifestations of intertextuality in scientific discourse are analyzed: from direct citations and allusions to implicit markers, such as terminological continuity and genre-specific clichés. The significance of intertextuality is defined as an implicit translation strategy that preserves the logical and philosophical integrity of a text within a specific scientific paradigm.
Particular attention is paid to a comparative analysis of manual translation and translation performed using artificial intelligence (AI). The study highlights the role of the translator as a facilitator capable of verifying presuppositions and correcting inaccuracies in neural network translations when reproducing complex concepts. The paper characterizes the specifics of conveying intertextual links based on the recipient’s background knowledge. Examples of translating German and English scientific structures into Ukrainian are provided and discussed in detail, specifically terms from the history of the language and complex lexical formations inherent in academic writing.
The research establishes that accounting for intertextual links is a critical condition for ensuring the translation adequacy of specialized texts, as it prevents terminological disorientation and stylistic dissonance. It was found that the GPT-4o and Gemini 3 Flash language models maintain translation adequacy when conveying intertextual connections within terms and clichés. It is proved that the effective use of AI in this field is possible only if the specialist possesses high digital and philological competence. Prospects for further research lie in the development of algorithms for evaluating the intertextual validity of machine translation within specific scientific schools, considering the context when translating abstracts, articles, and monographs.
