Abstract

The article is devoted to the description of the term system of German engineering psychology, i.e. a scientific discipline that studies the processes of informational interaction between humans and technology. The emergence of this field is due to rapid scientific and technological progress and the increasing demands on the mental and intellectual spheres of humans in the work process. The research material is a continuous sample of 4,565 terms and term combinations of German engineering psychology, of which 2,962 are classified as originally German terms.

The structural analysis of the terminology revealed the predominance of compound and abbreviations, followed by term combinations, derived words, and simple one-root terms. The ways of word formation of derived derivatives (prefixation, suffixation, prefix-suffix formation) are examined in detail. Particular attention is paid to compound terms, mostly two-component ones.

The features of polysemy and synonymy, which is a widespread phenomenon in engineering psychology terminology, are analyzed. The reasons for the emergence of numerous synonymous rows, including the influence of English-language terminology, are explained. Metaphorical and eponymic terms, which may create difficulties in decoding, are considered separately.

The presence of a diverse and extensive terminology indicates the gradual formation of engineering psychology as a scientific discipline. A comprehensive study based on a large empirical material allows to reveal the specifics of the terminological apparatus of this field of knowledge and the general patterns of its development.
