THE APPLICATION OF TRANSLATION TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE PROCESS OF TRANSLATING ENGLISH SONGS IN MUSICALS (BASED ON THE MATERIALS OF THE AMERICAN FILM MUSICAL “WICKED”)

Abstract

The article examines the definition, classification and essence of translation transformations (lexical-semantic, grammatical, stylistic) and their role in the transmission of the original language text into the target language. In particular, examples of their application in the translation of English-language songs from film musicals (based on the material of the American musical “Wicked”, which concentrates most of the key plot information in the songs) are considered in detail, taking into account the influence of the audiovisual format on the work of the translator, the limitations and requirements facing the specialist and the importance of translation transformations for the adequacy of the translation, the transmission of the plot content of the song, and the preservation of the rhythm of the original source. The problem of working with film translation is raised: the difficulties that are most often encountered in the work, the aspects that distinguish this type of work from others and the nuances that the specialist should focus on first of all in order to achieve the best result.

The study focuses on the analysis of the use of translation transformations by translators as a means of adapting songs in compliance with all the requirements imposed by this type of translation activity. Attention is paid to the issue of choosing a method of transmitting the content of the original language in the target language. Various research methodologies were applied: a comparative analysis of the original texts with the translated ones was conducted from the point of view of the use of translation transformations, examples of the transformations used were analyzed. Due to the statistical data collected from the comparison of the original and the translation, the percentage of the frequency of use of different types of transformations was calculated, the most and least used among each category (lexico-semantic, grammatical, stylistic) were determined, and the main translation transformations that are used most often were identified.
