Abstract

Syntax is one of the elements of the formal expression of the author's individual style. Different types of syntactic stylistic devices are the part of the whole syntactic organization of the work of art characteristic of a certain author. A comprehensive analysis of the syntactic level of an author’s individual style involves the studying of the stylistic devices. The article is an attempt to analyze syntactic stylistic means in the contemporary postmodern English-language discourse based on the novel by English writer Ian McEwan. Different types of syntactic figures and peculiarities of their use by the author are described as one of the components of his individual style. There are several classifications of syntactic stylistic devices. They are classified by two basic principles: according to the completeness of the sentence structure and according to the order of the sentence components. The first group includes stylistic devices, which are based on the reduction of the sentence model: ellipsis, one-member sentence, aposiopesis, asyndeton, the other group of stylistic devices is based on the extension of the structure: enumeration, polysyndeton, prolepsis, repetition. The second group also includes parallel constructions and stylistic changes in the order of words: inversion, division, insertion words. Thus, the richness and variety of syntactic stylistic devices in Ian McEwen's novels affirms the depth of the writer's style. The use of complex syntactic figures of different stylistic types allows the author to characterize the realities and interconnections of the modern world, their expressiveness and dynamism. We see further research prospects in studying the lexical features of the novels, in particular lexical stylistic figures.
