Urbanization processes in the western region of Ukraine: a retrospective-chorological analysis

Abstract. This article examines the historical characteristics of urbanization processes in the western region of Ukraine. Time periods are identified and the number of settlements granted Magdeburg rights and city status is determined (in the 12th-14th centuries – 15 cities; 15th-16th centuries – 48; 17th-18th centuries – 19; and 19th-20th centuries – 36 cities). The rates of growth in the urban population and the level of urbanization in the regions of Western Ukraine in the second half of the 20th century are characterized, and a comparative analysis with the average indicators for Ukraine is conducted. The dynamics of the population of the largest, large, and medium-sized cities over a 125-year period (1897-2022) are analyzed. The growth rates of the urban population by category (during 1959-2022) are determined.
The Western Ukrainian region is a long-settled area, a fact that has shaped the pattern of urban settlement. 94% of cities are ancient settlements; their economic foundations were primarily based on craft, market, and agricultural activities, which is why small settlements with populations ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 residents predominated. There are few new cities (7); their emergence is primarily due to the development of mineral deposits (coal, sulfur) and the construction of power plants (nuclear and hydroelectric).
Despite its low level of urbanization, the western Ukrainian region stood out in the second half of the 20th century for its higher rates of urbanization—specifically, growth in the urban population and the level of urbanization—compared to Ukraine as a whole.
Lviv is the only city in the region to be classified as a major city—it serves as the center of the regional settlement system. Lviv’s population is three times that of the region’s second-largest city, which exceeds the empirical “rank-size” rule. It was included in the list of major cities where, in order to limit growth, the construction of new industrial enterprises and the expansion of existing ones were prohibited. As a result, during the 1960s-1980s, Lviv’s population grew by only 1.9 times, while the population of the six major cities in the western region grew by 2.9 times.
Large cities grew most rapidly in the second half of the 20th century. Among them, the regional centers in areas with the lowest levels of urbanization – Rivne, Ternopil, and Lutsk – developed most dynamically. The overall trend in the demographic dynamics of the region’s six largest cities in the late 20th and early 21st centuries is characterized by a smooth curve of slow population growth.
Medium-sized cities grew at a faster rate than the overall urban population of the western region. The general trend in population dynamics for medium-sized cities in the late 20th and early 21st centuries was a gradual decline in population
