The role of recreational water use in urban self-government (Korostyshivska UTC)

The multifunctional role of hydrological objects is determined by their use in various sectors, including water supply, energy production, transportation, recreation, and others. Over-urbanization, the pace of which began to accelerate in the 20th century, has led to an increased demand for recreational spaces in the 21st century. Human interaction with aquatic ecosystems exerts a positive effect on human health, particularly as urban residents generally experience high levels of stress due to work and lifestyle. Within the framework of this study, societal demands (access to water resources) and their relationship with local government approaches were examined.
Using the example of the city of Korostyshiv, it was assessed how well the topic of hydrology is covered in the local development strategy, as well as actions that can be taken in relation to this resource. It was found that there are 21 sites with an area of 129 hectares and rivers within the city: Teteriv, Dubovets, Zdvyzh, and Svynoluzhka. The integration of these resources into the long-term development of the city is to create a water route along the Teteriv River along with additional tourist services. However, a survey of the watercourse for its suitability for organizing seasonal recreation showed that the river bank is covered with a variety of grass vegetation; in some areas it is shallow and overgrown with blue-green algae; it is polluted with garbage and plastic waste.
Accordingly, the aqua-recreational function in the city can be partially fulfilled by artificial lakes and flooded granite quarries. The article studies the structure of water resource potential for the period from 1984 to 2021 to retrospectively assess the development of water resources and their individual categories, in the context of 6 Global Surface Water indicators. The main impact on the city's main water body is caused by the dam built between 1960-70 (no electricity generation), untreated wastewater discharges from enterprises, lack of monitoring, solid waste pollution, etc. The granite quarries and artificial reservoirs formed as a result of historical industrial activity have relatively stable hydrological conditions, determined mainly by precipitation and underground water supply. Thus, the existing water bodies of the city can be included in the recreational water use, provided that their quality characteristics are improved.
