Abstract

The taxonomic composition and systematic structure of age-old trees of the genus Quercus L. growing within the city of Chernivtsi and in parks-monuments of landscape gardening art of local significance located within the physical and geographical district of Northern Bukovyna were analyzed. The distribution of age-old Quercus L trees according to the main taxation parameters was determined. In total, 54 specimens of age-old Quercus L trees. were recorded, represented by 5 species and 2 forms.

It was established that the age structure is dominated by trees of the first age group (over 300 years); the dominance of plants with a trunk girth at breast height (GBH) of 200–300 cm and a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 50–100 cm was recorded. Analysis of the distribution by height classes revealed a pronounced predominance of trees belonging to the second height class.

The majority of the studied age-old Quercus L. trees demonstrate high and very high levels of winter hardiness, drought tolerance, resistance to atmospheric pollution, and resistance to pests and diseases, which corresponds to a generally good sanitary condition. Assessment of the vitality condition of age-old Quercus trees showed variability within the range of 20–40 points, depending on site conditions and the intensity of anthropogenic load associated with urban infrastructure. A comprehensive evaluation of the ornamental value of age-old trees of the genus Quercus L. revealed that 100% of the studied specimens belong to the group of highly ornamental plants. These trees are recommended for use in urban and settlement landscaping, as well as for the planning and reconstruction of parks and squares, contributing to increased aesthetic appeal and enhanced recreational potential.
